Seniors Shine on Senior Day but NMSU Sweeps CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of CSU Bakersfield seniors put together powerful performances on Senior Day at the Roadrunner Softball Complex, but the visiting NM State Aggies swept the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

CSUB 4, NMSU 7

The `Runners jumped out to an early lead in the second inning on the bat of senior Chris Hipa. The second baseman sent a deep blast to left field for the 14th home run of her career, which ties for third in CSUB's Division I history.

Starting in the circle for the `Runners, freshman Kiara Azevedo pitched well for the first three innings, but the Aggies got to the lefty in the top of the fourth. NMSU plated four runs on five hits, capping the big inning with a sacrifice fly ball to go ahead 4-1.

Unfazed by the scoring spurt, the `Runners answered right back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own. The scoring started with an RBI double from senior Nadia Amezcua. After an error allowed Hipa to come around and score, designated player Jocelyn Betancourt recorded an RBI single to tie the score at 4-4.

The Aggies loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and scored one run before sophomore Julie Lewis was able to get the `Runners out of the jam. NMSU extended its lead with two insurance runs in the seventh and CSUB was unable to rally in the bottom half of the frame, falling by a final score of 7-4.

On the game, CSUB had seven base hits from seven different `Runners. Hipa combined her home run with a walk for a 1-for-2 day with two runs scored. Azevedo threw 3.1 innings and gave up four runs in the no decision. Lewis pitched 2.2 innings in relief and took the loss after giving up a pair of runs to the Aggies.

CSUB 3, NMSU 11 (5 inn.)

The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second inning. A squibbed, infield single brought in one run before a double scored two more. A good relay throw from left fielder Maxine Langenberg on the play was cut off by shortstop Cydney Curran, who cut down a runner going back to third to end the inning with CSUB trailing 3-0.

Bakersfield loaded the bases in the bottom of the second thanks to three singles, but the Aggies were able to get out of the jam with a fly ball. NMSU tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the third, taking a 5-0 lead on the `Runners. NM State exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a pair of big home runs.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Amezcua enjoyed a special moment on Senior Day when the senior outfielder sent a line drive over the left center wall for a solo home run. With the `Runners down 11-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Amezcua one hopped the wall with an RBI double that scored Hipa. With two `Runners on base and one out, NMSU's Samaria Diaz struck out the final two batters to seal the 11-3 victory.

Amezcua went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI while recording the fourth home run of her career. Curran, a junior, went 2-for-2 while five other `Runners tallied hits in the game. Sophomore Daryn Hitzel took the loss after two and two thirds innings while freshman Kiara Azevedo pitched 1.1 innings in relief. Fellow freshman Avery Fitch combined for two innings of work on the day, allowing just one run to the potent Aggie offense.
