Beach Volleyball Travels to Pismo for Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow when they head to Pismo Beach for a pairs tournament against Cal Poly and CSUN.

The format will be a bit different this weekend. Twenty pairs teams will be divided into five pools of four pairs each. In competition, there will be eight pairs from Cal Poly and six each from CSUN and CSUB. Each team will compete against the other four teams in their pool in sets to 28 points to determine placement.

The 20 teams will then be divided up again into Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions. The gold division will be made up of all the first-place teams from pool play and the top three second-place teams. Those teams will then play a minimum of three games in an eight-team bracket format. The silver division will have the same format for the final two second-place teams and all five third-place pairs. The bronze division will remain in pool play. In total, each team will play seven matches to 28 points.

The Matadors (2-4) will be a familiar foe for the Roadrunners (3-2). Just last weekend, CSUB knocked off CSUN 4-1 in Malibu. Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner won in a sweep (21-9, 21-18) at the No. 1 pair and the No. 2 team of Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat (21-15, 22-20) also won in straight sets. Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez dropped the first set at the No. 5 spot but rallied for a 13-21, 21-8, 15-13 victory. At No. 3, Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova were also victorious with a 21-16, 18-21, 15-11 win.

Entering the weekend, the Mustangs (3-3) are ranked as the No. 7 team in the nation despite a 3-3 record. Cal Poly's losses have all come against teams ranked among the top 10 teams in the country, including No. 1 UCLA. They own victories over No. 9 South Carolina, No. 18 Tulane and the University of Tampa. Last season, Cal Poly defeated CSUB in all three meetings.

Tomorrow's tournament will begin at 9:00 a.m.
