Three Named to Pac-12 All-Academic Team

SAN FRANCSICO – Three CSU Bakersfield wrestlers were named to the 2019 Pac-12 Conference Wrestling All-Academic teams on Tuesday.  Mark Penyacsek earned First Team honors, while three-time NCAA qualifiers Sean Nickell and Russell Rohlfing were named to the Second Team.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's competition.

Mark Penyacsek earned his second straight First Team selection on Tuesday.  Penyacsek has a 3.88 grade-point average in biology.  Penyacsek was CSUB's starter at 197 pounds this season and finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championships.  He finished the season with an 11-16 record and three pins. 

Sean Nickell was named to the Second Team for the third straight year.  The redshirt senior is a computer science major with a 3.06 GPA.  On the mat, he led CSUB with 25 wins and won his second Pac-12 Conference title.  Competing at 133 pounds, Nickell went 1-2 at the NCAA Championships after qualifying for the third consecutive season. 

Russell Rohlfing earned Second Team honors for the second time in his career.  Rohlfing is a redshirt junior engineering major with a 3.05 GPA.  He also qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third straight season and advanced to the Round of 16 after pinning Virginia Tech's Ryan Blees.  He finished third at the Pac-12 Championships at 149 pounds and concluded the year with 18 wins.
