Beach Volleyball Beats CSUN



LONG BEACH, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's beach volleyball team went one for three on the road this weekend. The Roadrunners clipped Cal State Northridge on Saturday afternoon but fell to No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 8 Long Beach State.
 
"Today we competed well against two top teams in the country," said head coach Cesar Benatti. "We did a great job against CSUN despite the rough weather conditions. "We had a great attitude all day and battled through difficulties. I'm very satisfied with the way the team is performing."

In their first match against Division I competition this season, the Roadrunners couldn't have picked a much tougher opponent.  Pepperdine won the 2017 national championship and is currently ranked third nationally.

  5. Simon Priebe/Melanie Paul (PEP) def. Brooke Boiseau/Krista Hernandez (CSUB) 22-20, 21-9
CSUB lost 2-0 in each of the five matches contested against the powerhouse.  At the No. 5 position, Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez nearly scored an opening set victory, but the Waves hung on for a 22-20 victory. 

CSUB 4, CSUN 1
The Roadrunners rose to the occasion in their second match of the morning.  CSUB took a 2-1 lead over the Matadors, who are receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll, after Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner won 21-9, 21-18 at No. 1 pair and Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat were victorious at No. 2, 21-15, 22-20. 
 
Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez clinched the match for CSUB at the No. 5 position with a 13-21, 21-8, 15-13 comeback win.  Sidney Wicks and Hana Makanova finished off the Matadors with the second three-set victory of the match, 21-16, 18-21, 15-11.

In their third match of the day, the Roadrunners found themselves up against another top ten opponent as the Beach rank eighth in the country.

  4. Sophie Major/Kendra Koelsch (LBSU) def. Ally Barber/Rafa Bonifacio (CSUB) 21-14, 21-16
  5. Tyler Springgs/Claire Newlander (LBSU) def. Brooke Boiseau/Krista Hernandez (CSUB) 21-14, 21-14
CSUB lost 2-0 in each of the five matches contested against Long Beach. At the No. 4 position, Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio played the host team the closest in the second set, but the Beach claimed the five-point victory.
