Roadrunners Split at Home on Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Returning home for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team defeated Marymount California University, but lost to CSUN on Saturday at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

"The first match was good for us," said CSUB Head Coach Cesar Benatti.  "We had the advantage and used that pretty well.  In the second game against CSUN, some of our players were flatter than they usually are.  Some of them couldn't execute things we've been practicing.  Moving on, we have to have a little more focus to be more intense and aggressive, which is when we perform our best.  If we don't have that focus, we're not going to be able to move to the next step."

CSUB 4, Marymount California 1
The Roadrunners defeated the Mariners 4-1 to begin the day.  Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio made quick work of the Marymount's No. 4 pair to get CSUB on the scoreboard with matching 21-12 set victories.  Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat gave the `Runners a 2-0 advantage after the first set of matches, winning 21-8, 21-11.

Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova clinched the match with a dominating 21-6, 21-5 win at the No. 3 pair, and Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez made it 4-0 by winning 21-7, 21-6.  At the top spot in the lineup, Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner nearly completed a comeback after dropping the first set 22-20.  The top `Runner pair tied the score at 1-1 with a 21-13 win in the second set and led 12-8 in the final set, but ran out of steam and fell 15-13.

CSUN 3, CSUB 2
This was the third straight weekend the Matadors and the `Runners have competed against each other.  Two weekends ago, CSUB scored a 4-1 win in Zuma Beach and last weekend the two squads met up in the Cal Poly Pairs Tournament.

The Matadors evened the season series at 1-1 with today's victory, but the two teams will meet twice more before the end of the regular season.  CSUB won the top two pairs on Saturday.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner bounced back from their loss earlier in the day to Marymount with a 14-21, 21-17, 15-11 comeback win.  At the No. 2 spot, Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat improved to 5-2 on the year with a 21-19, 21-15 win.

Sophomore Emily Hansen made her season debut at the No. 5 spot with Ally Barber, but the Roadrunners were defeated 21-15, 21-13.

CSUB (4-3) will be back at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center on Tuesday when they play North Florida, who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll at 10:00 a.m. and Westcliff at 2:00 p.m.
