D’Arcy Claims Runner-Up at National Meet

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Swimming in her first-ever meet against national competition, freshman Autumn D'Arcy was unafraid of the big stage as the CSU Bakersfield women's swimmer finished second in the 50-yard butterfly at the National Invitation Championships.

D'Arcy continued her sensational first season in Bakersfield with the runner-up performance in the 50 fly.  She dropped nearly half of a second of her prelim time to touch the wall in second in 23.85.

Junior Jayssie Haynes finished in 19th in the 500 free (4:54.29), but swam the third-fastest time in school history in the prelims.  Haynes finished in 4:53.86 in her opening swim of the day, which was nearly three seconds faster than her previous best of 4:56.68 from last season.

"D'Arcy and Haynes continue to lead the way for the `Runners," said Director of Swimming Chris Hansen.  "Autumn had a big 50 fly, finishing second. She is making a name for herself.  Just last night, Jayssie and I decided to swim the 500 free instead of her WAC event the 200 IM.  That ended up being a great decision.  She scored points and now has the third-best time in CSUB history.  Tatum (Collatz) was just shy of making it back tonight in the 50 back, but swam her best time ever in her last 50 back in an individual race. The 400 medley of Tatum, Jayssie, Autumn and Maddie (Cosgrove) was a bit off tonight but they're fighting strong.  Like the men, I'm super proud of them. Tomorrow is a strong day for them.

The relay team of D'Arcy, Maddie Cosgrove, Abigail Abshire and Alisa Cooke nearly swam an all-time top five time in the 200 free, but finished just .09 seconds off of the list (1:34.43) and took 16th.  To cap the evening, the foursome of Tatum Collatz, Haynes, D'Arcy and Maddie Cosgrove finished 18th in the 400 medley relay (3:47.20).

Earlier in the day, Collatz finished 22nd in the 50 backstroke (26.12), and Cosgrove swam a 5:02.22 in the 500 free to place 40th

After the first night of competition, CSUB ranks 19th out of 42 teams with 39 points.

The meet continues tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST.  The finals session starts at 6:00 p.m. EST.
