Two Key League Games Await CSUB This Week

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball will open the second half of Western Athletic Conference action this week when the Roadrunners face New Mexico State University on Thursday and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. Both contests are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. PT.

NM State sits atop the WAC standings while Rio Grande Valley is in a four-way tie for second with Bakersfield, Utah Valley, and Kansas City. Two wins this week would extend the `Runners road streak to five and put them a game behind NMSU and a game ahead of the teams tied for second.

We can't rest with the group that we have," explained head coach Greg McCall. "Every time I think we've turned a corner it's like what's next? It's important for us to remain humble and hangry at the same time from the top down in order for us to have success night after night. I can't cut our team any breaks right now."

The last time the Roadrunners saw UTRGV was three weeks ago at home on the Kern Schools Court when the squad scored 26 points in the fourth to comeback from a seven-point deficit and defeat the Vaqueros 68-63.

The `Runners weren't as fortunate in their fourth quarter comeback against NM State. Down four heading into the fourth quarter, Bakersfield tied the game twice in the last two minutes but with the game tied and two seconds left on the clock the Aggies would score off an out of bounds play underneath their own basket and steal a 61-59 win on the road.

"If they're not ready for these games this week then something is wrong with us," said McCall. "We had an opportunity to win at home against NM State but they got us at the buzzer. We know their number one in the league so we know what's at stake on Thursday then we have to go down to RGV and take care of business there."

CSUB is coming off a thirteen-point win over Grand Canyon while riding a three-game road streak. The Roadrunners are led by senior guard Alexxus Gilbert who is averaging 16.8 points overall and 17.1 through conference – good enough for fourth in the league.
