CSUB Goes Perfect on Opening Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After beating Irvine Valley College and Gavilan College yesterday, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team added victories over Cal State LA and Vanguard University today at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center. 

"Today was really good," said CSUB Head Coach Cesar Benatti.  "We did some really good things.  We had really good energy and were really consistent on serving and passing and we had a really good day hitting as well.  It's great to start this way and progressively get better against better, stronger competition.  We couldn't be in a better place to start the season."

The Roadrunners didn't drop a set in their first match against NCAA competition this season.  The No. 5 team of Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez had the most dominant performance, holding the Golden Eagles to seven points in the first set, before winning their match 21-15 in the second. 

Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio put the `Runners on the board 1-0 with a 21-10, 21-14 sweep at the No. 4 position.  The freshman pair of Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat made it 2-0 after the first set of matches, winning 21-13, 21-15. 

In the final set of matches, Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova clinched the match for CSUB with a 21-10, 21-13 victory at the No. 3 position.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner were victorious at the No. 1 spot in the lineup with a pair of 21-15 set wins.

CSUB 4, Vanguard 1
CSUB nearly competed a perfect 20-0 weekend on the scoreboard, but came up just short in a hotly contested match at the top spot.  Vanugard's Kelli Dowell and Hannah Holder and CSUB's Mattison DeGramo and Briannah Mariner needed extra points in both sets, but it was the Lions that came away with a 22-20, 23-21 victory. 

Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat were stellar in the second match, blanking the Lions 21-17, 21-14 and Ally Barba and Rafa Bonifacio completed a perfect weekend with a 21-12, 21-12 win at the No. 4 spot.  Hayley McCluskey and Leisa Elisaia earned their first win of the season at the No. 6 spot with 21-15, 21-10 set scores. 

Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova breezed past their counterparts at the No. 3 position, 21-17, 21-14 and Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez cruised to a 21-7, 21-13 win.

The Roadrunners (2-0) will look to continue their winning ways next weekend in Malibu.  CSUB will have a tripleheader on Saturday, beginning with No. 8 Long Beach State at 9:00 a.m. and continuing with CSUN, who is receiving votes in the national rankings. They will complete the day with No. 4 Pepperdine.
