Bakersfield Awaits Sunday Matchup At CBU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After picking up a pair of conference wins at home last week, CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team is itching to get back on the floor and increase their conference win total. This week the Roadrunners have a single contest on Sunday at California Baptist before closing out the regular season with three games at the Icardo Center.

The Lancers are coming off a bye week and sit one game ahead of Bakersfield in fourth place. Securing a victory this weekend could move CSUB up to a two-way tie for third or a three-way tie for second depending on how UTRGV and Utah Valley do against their competition.

The last time the Roadrunners saw CBU was nearly a month ago when the intrastate visitors came to town and stunned the `Runners with a twenty-three-point decision on the Kern Schools Court in the Icardo Center. The Lancers would go on to win their next four out of five conference games and are currently riding a four-game win streak.

"I think we're mentally stronger now," said head coach Greg McCall. "CBU was just one of those games where we were cold – ice cold. We were cold mentally and physically. It was like we were playing with our feet stuck in ice. We weren't thinking, couldn't hit easy shots. Our defense was still somewhat there though. Whenever they faced our defense they struggled – badly, so we just needed to capitalize on the other end."

Bakersfield boasts one of the top defenses in the country holding a top 25 rank in steals, steals per game, turnovers forced, and turnover margin. Alexxus Gilbert continues to lead the team in scoring averaging 17.0 points overall and 17.5 in league – fourth-best in the WAC. Malayasia McHenry joins Gilbert in double figure scoring with 10.6 on the season and has led CSUB in rebounding all year.
