CSUB Consistent From Start to Finish in Chicago

Box Score

CHICAGO – CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball team got out to a big first-half lead in Thursday night's Western Athletic Conference road game and never looked back. The Roadrunners used a well-rounded offense and solid team defense, never letting Chicago State get within striking distance the rest of the way as CSUB earned a 75-62 victory in the Jones Convocation Center.

Bakersfield enjoyed double-digit scoring from four different `Runners including sophomore Jarkel Joiner's team-high 16 points. Redshirt senior James Suber dominated the glass, pulling down seven offensive rebounds and 13 total boards on the way to his fifth double-double of the season. A native of Philadelphia, Suber also posted 13 points against the Cougars.

Coming off the bench to play 20 minutes was junior forward Darius Williams. The junior college transfer scored eight points in the second half, helping the `Runners keep the Cougars down, while finishing the night with a season-high 12 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Justin McCall played 30 minutes and posted four points, five rebounds, and a career-high four assists on Thursday.

The `Runners used a 17-5 run to gain a 24-11 lead on the Cougars in the first 11 minutes of the game. Chicago State climbed within six points on Anthony Harris' free throws at 26-20, but the Cougars would never get any closer than that. McCall drove to the hoop and kicked out to redshirt sophomore Justin Edler-Davis for a wide open three to stall the CSU momentum.

Bakersfield went on an 11-2 run over the final six minutes to take a 43-27 lead into halftime. The `Runners converted on 61% of their first-half shots including 6-of-11 from behind the arc. CSUB's defense was strong, holding Chicago State to just 29% shooting from the field in the opening period.

Holden, a senior from Laurel, Miss., had a game-high 10 points at the halftime break while Suber had four points and seven rebounds. McCall did a little bit of everything with four points, five rebounds, and two assists in the first 20 minutes.

From a 48-32 advantage for CSUB, Chicago State went on a 10-2 run to draw within eight points, the closest the Cougars would get in the second half. Joiner cut down the run with a fadeaway jumper in the paint. Later, the sophomore guard put the `Runners up by 18 points, 67-49, CSUB's biggest lead of the game.

CSUB coasted to the end of the game with the `Runner bench getting plenty of quality minutes throughout the contest. Bakersfield finished the game shooting 53% from the field, third-best in a game this season. The `Runners outrebounded the Cougars 36-30 on their home court in Thursday night's victory.

Bakersfield (16-9, 7-4 WAC) is headed off to Kansas City, Mo. on Friday to prepare for Saturday's WAC matchup with the Kansas City Kangaroos. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and `Runner fans can watch live via the WAC Digital Network.
