`Runners Look Ahead To Grand Canyon

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball will close week five of Western Athletic Conference action with the first of three-straight road games when the Roadrunners travel to Arizona this weekend for a single contest at Grand Canyon University on Saturday afternoon.

GCU has three wins and four losses in WAC action after falling to Utah Valley, picking up back-to-back wins at Seattle U and NM State, then dropping their next three to UTRGV, Chicago State, and Kansas City. The Lopes are coming off a four-point win over California Baptist, a team Bakersfield lost to earlier in the week by twenty-three points.

The first time CSUB and Grand Canyon met was nineteen seasons ago when the Roadrunners opened the all-time series with two California Collegiate Athletic Association wins. Since then the Lopes have tallied just three wins in twenty-three matchups. The last time the `Runners handed GCU a loss was last year in the WAC Tournament semifinals.

Bakersfield is one game behind clinching a two-way tie for third with Utah Valley. Alexxus Gilbert continues to lead her team and the league in scoring with 18.7 points a game through eight games played. JJ Johnson joins Gilbert in double-figure averaging 11.6 per contest this month. As a team, the Roadrunners are looking to bounce back from the 45-68 loss to CBU and improve 9-12, 5-3 WAC by the end of the week.
