Moore Leads `Runners in Loss Against Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. – A late surge by Ole Miss helped the home team hold off the visiting Roadrunners as CSU Bakersfield fell to the Rebels, 83-66, in Saturday afternoon's contest, Bakersfield's first-ever game against an SEC opponent. CSUB was able to rally from an early, 13-point deficit to make the Rebels sweat while redshirt junior Taze Moore, making a Mississippi homecoming, led the way with his team-high 17 points.

"We were not the aggressors when we came out," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We came here to win; we didn't come here to just show up…I thought we did not play well in the first 12 minutes, but our guys started to gain some confidence and we made some plays. From there, we had buried ourselves too deep, but I thought the guys did a really good job."

Ole Miss jumped out to a 12-0 lead before a pair of Shawn Stith free throws would get the `Runners on the board. CSUB continued chipping away at the Rebel lead, cutting it to just seven points at 19-12. With just over four minutes left, a De'Monte Buckingham three-pointer followed by a Czar Perry free throw cut the deficit to just six points at 36-30.

On their final offensive possession of the first half, Ronne Readus cleaned up a missed shot for an easy layup, bringing CSUB within three points. On the other end of the floor, Bakersfield got a defensive stop to send itself to halftime trailing Ole Miss 37-40.

Stith, a junior forward, led all `Runners with 10 points while not missing a single shot in the first half (3-for-3 FG, 4-for-4 FT). Readus, a 6-foot-9 center, was effective, chipping in six points and five rebounds in just nine minutes. Perry, a point guard, added five points and four assists to the `Runner effort. Both teams went 12-for-24 from the field in the first half with one extra three-pointer and two more free throws comprising the slim advantage for the host Rebels.

As they did in the first half, the Rebels began to pull away from the `Runners, building a 62-50 lead with nine minutes left in the second half. CSUB was playing without the guidance of Barnes, who was ejected from the game a few minutes earlier on a pair of quick technical fouls for arguing a call with the officials.

Bakersfield rallied again, pulling within six points at 70-64, with just under five minutes remaining, but the Rebels pushed their lead back out to 15 points with 80 seconds remaining. Unable to find that final push they needed, the `Runners fell to their SEC opponent, 83-67.

When asked about the ejection, Barnes expressed his disappointment with the call: "We're going to fight until people recognize who Bakersfield is and every time we go to the floor, I'm going to fight for our guys. I thought there were too many bang-bang calls and we weren't getting any and I expressed that to the referee. It was okay for me to get the first technical, but I thought the second was unbelievable." After the first whistle, Barnes proceeded to plead his case to the official and was called for a second technical mere seconds after his first in a shock to the whole Pavilion. The OlRebel fans gave Barnes, an Ole Miss alum and former Head Coach of the program, a standing ovation on his way to the locker room.

Moore, who hails from Southaven, Miss., less than an hour down the road, posted a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Perry, also playing close to his hometown of El Dorado, Ark., contributed 16 points and a season-high eight assists in the loss. Stith, a 6-foot-8 forward, pounded the paint to the tune of 15 points, his first double-digit scoring effort in nearly a month.

With the victory, Ole Miss improved to 6-3 on the season. The Rebels have some impressive results on their schedule including wins over Penn State and Seattle U while posting a pair of narrow losses against Top 25-ranked squads in Memphis and Butler. CSUB fell to 4-7 in non-conference play and will have a week to prepare for its next matchup, a road contest at Idaho on Dec. 14.
