Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UCR Escapes the `Runners 53-52

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team closed the decade in thrilling fashion on Tuesday afternoon. A hard-fought battle against future Big West Conference foe UC Riverside unfortunately went in favor of the Highlanders in the last second of the contest. With the 53-52 loss, Bakersfield finished the non-conference slate near perfect (6-1) against California-based teams. An away and home conference series with California Baptist gives the `Runners an opportunity to go 8-1 against teams played from California in 2019-20.

The first points of the game came from the charity stripe two minutes into the contest after senior guard Dalis Jones split a pair. Riverside took the lead from the free throw line a minute and a half later before the Roadrunners tied the score with a free throw from Miracle Saxon.

The first made basket was from UCR four minutes into the period, followed by a quick layup out of their press break gave the Highlanders a four-point lead. CSUB's first made basket was under five minutes into the first quarter off an isolation pull up jumper from Ashley Austin. That shot brought the game back within one possession just before the first media timeout.

UC Riverside came out of the media and scored two straight baskets before Andie Easley made one of her own. The Highlanders and `Runners traded baskets again to close the period 14-10 in favor for the home team.

Jayden Eggleston sparked a 5-0 run in the middle of the second period that caused UCR to call a timeout after seeing their ten-point lead cut in half. CSUB did not let up out of the timeout. The `Runners finished the half with a 19-6 advantage to take a 31-28 lead heading into the locker room.

Eggleston remained consistent as she opened the third quarter with a turnaround jump shot in the key. CSUB built nearly a ten-point lead midway through the third, but the Highlanders clawed back to make it a one-point game with four minutes and forty-six minutes. At the end of the third Bakersfield had held on to a four-point, 46-42, lead.

The game never seemed as if it were going in favor of UCR until the final buzzer blew. UCR was up two points with 18 seconds left on the clock then Vanessa Austin was at the line with one second left. She cashed in on the first free throw but missed the second. Eggleston collected her miss but could not convert through the contact as UCR survived the `Runners 53-52.

Ashley Austin had a game-high 17 points while Eggleston finished with almost a double double (11 points, 9 rebounds). Jones had a team-best three assists and a game-high five steals.

Bakersfield begins its WAC Farewell Tour on Saturday when the Roadrunners open their conference tilt at Grand Canyon.
