No. 22 Texas Tech Fends Off `Runners in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – A hard-fought road game slipped away from CSU Bakersfield Sunday afternoon as the Roadrunners suffered a loss against No. 22 Texas Tech Sunday afternoon. The `Runners battled the Red Raiders to a four-point deficit at halftime, but the host team surged in the second half to earn a 73-58 win over CSUB.

"We didn't take care of the basketball enough," said CSUB's ninth-year Head Coach, Rod Barnes. "Texas Tech is a really talented team and I told our guys they would make a run. They don't make mistakes and they are well-coached."

Justin Edler-Davis heated up for a team-high 10 points and added six rebounds against Texas Tech. Nine `Runners tallied at least four points while point guard Czar Perry played 37 minutes and chipped in four points, five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.

Bakersfield battled against its host and out-rebounded TTU, 36-29, on the way to 16 second-chance points. CSUB's bench tallied 35 points to the Red Raiders' 10 and the `Runners edged Tech in the paint, 24-22.

The `Runners closed out non-conference play on Sunday having endured a tough schedule of opponents and learning important lessons along the way. Of Bakersfield's 11 Division I opponents, seven squads posted 20+-win seasons a year ago while No. 22 Texas Tech and No. 1 Gonzaga both tallied over 30 wins.

Barnes commented on his team's challenging first half of the season: "I think our guys had a good non-conference. We had a few games get away from us because we were new to each other…We're prepared to go into conference play. Hopefully we can pull off our first conference win and gain some momentum from there."

The `Runners went toe-to-toe with the Red Raiders in the first half of Sunday's contest. While the home team was able to build a 17-10 lead, Texas Tech would not lead by more than that margin in the period. CSUB stormed back with a 10-3 run to tie the score at 20 points apiece on shot-clock beating jumper by Shawn Stith.

In the final minutes of the opening period, TTU pulled ahead for a six-point lead, but junior guard De'Monte Buckingham nailed a floater in the lane just before the buzzer. CSUB was even with TTU in most categories and the `Runners out-rebounded the Red Raiders 20-12, but the host team found itself leading by four points at the break, 33-29.

Junior Cam Allen paced the `Runners in the first half with six points, two assists, and two rebounds. Bakersfield's well-rounded offense featured seven different `Runners to make a basket. Junior forward Greg Lee scored four points and grabbed four boards in the period.

Texas Tech came out of the locker room shooting lights out as the Red Raiders hit three-straight three-pointers on their way to a 42-31 advantage. CSUB answered with back-to-back buckets from Buckingham and Stith to get the `Runners back on track. Bakersfield pulled within three points at 41-44 on a Justin Edler-Davis three-pointer.

The Red Raiders used a 9-0 run to pull ahead by 14 points, 57-43, just over halfway through the second period. With four minutes remaining, Perry hit Lee for a three-pointer that cut Tech's lead to 10 points, but the `Runners would not be able to close the gap any further. TTU took its largest lead at 73-54 and finished off the 15-point victory in the United Supermarkets Arena, 73-58.

CSUB (6-9) will return to the Icardo Center next weekend to kick off Western Athletic Conference play. The `Runners will open their league slate on Saturday, Jan. 4, against Grand Canyon before hosting California Baptist on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
