Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUB Falls to Hot-Handed San Francisco

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team was unable to slow the San Francisco Dons, who shot 76 percent from three-point range on their way to a 100-70 victory in the War Memorial Gym Tuesday night.

"We've got a lot of work we have to get back to, we have a lot to focus on," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's ninth-year Head Coach. "This is a team we knew was going to come in here and shoot the three, so we have got to do better at defending, especially defending the three. We have to give them some credit."

A slow start for the `Runners led to an early, 8-0 lead for the Dons. CSUB was 0-for-5 from the field in the first four minutes of the game despite taking smart shots. The `Runner offense got rolling after that, but Bakersfield's defense struggled in transition as a 9-0 run helped USF earn a 20-6 lead.

CSUB started to settle down and picked the pockets of the Dons multiple times to cut the deficit to just five points at 16-21. The `Runners continued to chip away, drawing as close as four points at 20-24, but the Dons put together a 23-6 run down the stretch. USF used the late sprint to take a 47-28 lead into halftime.

In the opening 20 minutes, USF burned CSUB from three-point range, converting on 10-of-13 shots from behind the arc. The `Runners converted on 40 percent of their shots from the field in the first half, but they gave up 15 points off turnovers to the host Dons.

The `Runners opened the second half with some fervor, cutting back into the USF lead at 43-56 on back-to-back corner three-pointers from redshirt junior Taze Moore. Each time CSUB pushed, USF pushed back and the Dons were able to surge again, taking a 27-point lead at 80-53 with just over seven minutes remaining. Bakersfield was unable to close the gap and ultimately fell by the final score of 70-100.

USF converted 19-of-24 (.760) three-point shots on the game, firing at will from distance. The `Runners did not shoot poorly themselves, converting on 46.7 percent of its field goal attempts, but CSUB could not slow the Dons in the loss.

Redshirt junior Cam Allen and junior Justin McCall both heated up in the second half to lead CSUB on the offensive front. Allen tallied a team-high 15 points to go with two steals while McCall chipped in 14 points and four rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Moore, a guard from Southaven, Miss., did a little bit of everything on Tuesday night, adding 10 points, six rebounds, and two blocks against the Dons.

The `Runners (2-3) have one more road game this week as CSUB is slated for a matchup with No. 7/8 Gonzaga on Saturday, Nov. 23. Bakersfield will tip off with the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in Spokane, Wash. `Runner fans will be able to follow along with the live broadcast via the WCC Network.
