CSUB Falls to GCU in Regular-Season Finale

PHOENIX – In Saturday's regular-season finale, CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team dropped a four-set match on the road against Grand Canyon. The Roadrunners rallied for a big win in the second set, but the Lopes finished off the match with back-to-back set wins for a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-14, 12-25, 16-25).

Redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau led the `Runners in Saturday's loss, posting a match-high 16 kills. Redshirt freshman Hana Makonova (11) and junior Emily Hansen (10) both tallied double-digit kills against the Lopes. Redshirt senior Sidney Wicks recorded another double-double with 28 assists and 14 digs.

Trailing GCU 18-19  in the first set, CSUB went on a 4-1 run to take a 22-20 lead, but the Lopes rallied with four-straight points to regain the lead. The `Runners continued to battle, winning the next point on a big swing by Milica Vukobrat, but GCU closed out the set, 25-23, with one final point.

The `Runners held a slim, early lead in Set 2 before going on a big run. CSUB surged ahead with a 9-2 sprint to take an 18-9 advantage on the Lopes. GCU attempted to slow the `Runners down, but Bakersfield would not be stopped. CSUB earned a 25-14 win to tie the match at one set apiece.

GCU stormed out of the break to take an 11-2 lead over CSUB in the third set. Just as dominantly as Bakersfield won the second set, the Lopes earned a 25-12 win in Set 3 to regain a lead on the match.

The Lopes continued their momentum into the fourth set, taking a 16-7 lead. CSUB put a 4-0 run together to put some pressure on GCU, but the host team held off the `Runners for a 25-16 victory to win the match.

With the loss, CSUB (9-19, 4-12 WAC) closed out the regular season half a match ahead of Seattle U in the Western Athletic Conference standings. The Redhawks have one match remaining on Sunday, Nov. 17, which will decide whether CSUB or SU claims the sixth and final spot in next week's WAC Tournament. A Seattle U win would send the Redhawks to the tourney in Orem, Utah by way of the tiebreakers, but if the Redhawks lose, CSUB will head to the postseason.
