`Runner Volleyball Set for WAC Matches at NMSU, UTRGV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner volleyball team is hoping to ride the momentum from an exciting victory in the Icardo Center last Saturday into a pair of Western Athletic Conference road matches this week.

CSU Bakersfield (7-9, 2-2 WAC) is slated for a tough road trip, starting the week's matches at WAC-leader NM State on Thursday. The `Runners and Aggies have met 17 times previously with NMSU holding a 12-5 advantage in those matchups.

NM State remains undefeated early on in WAC play, taking victories in its first four league matches on the way to a 13-3 overall record. Reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week Savannah Davison leads the way for the Aggies with her 3.45 kills per sets. Middle blocker Megan Hart also represents a tough challenge for the `Runners as she averages 2.64 kills and 1.08 blocks per set.

UTRGV (8-10, 2-2 WAC) split a pair of WAC road matches last week and will be looking to get back on track at home against CSUB. The `Runners and Vaqueros are preparing for the 20th meeting in their all-time series. Bakersfield has historically dominated the series and has won seven of the last ten matchups with UTRGV, but the two teams split a pair of regular-season meetings in 2018.

The Vaqueros have a pair of hard-hitting student-athletes in Barbara Silva and Sarah Cruz, who both tally over 3.1 kills per set. UTRGV looks to setter Debora Nazario to run the floor and she does so efficiently with 9.09 assists per set, third-best in the WAC.

Last week, the `Runners  looked to sophomore Milica Vukobrat to lead the way. The native of Novi Sad, Serbia averaged 3.50 kills, 2.50 digs, and 1.00 blocks per set over two WAC matches last week, doing a little bit of everything for the `Runners. CSUB's lineup is well-rounded and Director of Volleyball Giovana Melo gets productivity up and down the roster.

CSUB will open this week's play with a match at NM State on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. (PT). The `Runners and Vaqueros will round out league play on Saturday, Oct. 12, with a 10 a.m. (PT) first serve. Both of these matches will be live streamed via the WAC Digital Network. Links for live stats and live streams are available on the CSUB volleyball schedule page.
