Roadrunners Split on WAC Opening Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team picked up three conference points, its first home win since Sept. 15, and improved 6-6-1 on the season with a 3-2 win over the Utah Valley Wolverines Sunday afternoon. "What a great response from this group after Friday night," explained head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "This win belongs to the players, they got themselves ready for this game and they were in it for the right reasons. Every single player contributed today."

"We were determined for the whole game," added Vecchio, "even though they scored two goals in the last five minutes."

CSUB took an early lead in the second minute of the match. Chelsee Duran played a long ball into the box that Aryana Harvey headed towards Caitlin Goetjen who headed the pass past UVU's goalie for her second goal of the season.

Duran and Harvey picked up their second and fifth assists, respectively. Harvey is tied for fifth on the Division I individual season Top 10 assists list. Goetjen's goal at the 2:44-minute mark would be the only tally of the first half.

No one could have asked for a more thrilling second half. Darian Tatum played a cross to Eszter Toth in the 51st minute then Harvey took a pass from Toth in the 61st minute that gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead with less than 25 minutes in the contest.

What looked like a 3-0 shutout turned into a close match in the last five minutes as Harvey wound up with the game-winner. UVU broke through in the 84th minute then cut the deficit to one goal in the 86th minute. Jenna Shepherd tallied both goals for the Wolverines. She was assisted by Cassidy McCormick on the first goal and unassisted on the second.
