CSUB Set to Play Two WAC Home Matches

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Just past the midway point of the 2019 season, the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team is preparing to host its first two Western Athletic Conference matches of the year. The Roadrunners have returned to Bakersfield and will defend the Main Soccer Field against UNLV and Grand Canyon this weekend.

CSUB (1-6, 0-1 WAC) has been on the cusp of a major breakthrough this season with its young squad of talented student-athletes finding their way. Each of Bakersfield's losses has come by just one goal as the `Runners are on the brink of finding a rhythm at just the right time. The `Runners look to captains Niklas Korber (four goals) and Carlos Armendariz (three goals) to lead the way.
UNLV (2-7, 0-1 WAC) will come to Bakersfield after a tough, first test in league play. The Rebels took a 2-0 loss at the hands of UT Rio Grande Valley, a WAC squad receiving votes in the Top 25 poll. Bryan Martinez-Serrano and Timo Mehlich lead the way for UNLV with three goals apiece this season. CSUB is 8-3-3 all-time against UNLV and the two teams played to a scoreless tie in Las Vegas a year ago.

Grand Canyon (4-2-1, 1-0 WAC) opened league play with a home victory over Incarnate Word, 1-0. The Lopes have scored just seven goals in as many matches, but all four of their wins have come by way of shutouts. CSUB and GCU have a rich history, dating all the way back to 1985, and the `Runners have dominated the series to the tune of a 24-6-1 record. CSUB has won its matches against the Lopes each of the past two seasons.

Friday's match against UNLV is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kickoff, an uncommon start time to accommodate CSUB's annual Education Day. The `Runners are expecting thousands of local school children in the stands, rooting CSUB to victory. On Sunday, the `Runners and Lopes will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Main Soccer Field.

Tickets for this weekend's matches are available ahead of time or at the gate. Fans who cannot make it to campus to support the `Runners in person can watch live via the WAC Digital Network. Links to live stats and the live streams are available on the CSUB men's soccer schedule page.
