Important Weekend for Women's Soccer on the Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Through the first half of the 2019 WAC regular season CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team is right where they want to be – in the driver seat.

"I believe this is a key weekend for all the teams in our league," said head coach Sebastain Vecchio. "After these games, there will be some type of separation between the top and bottom teams. We hope to be on the top half by the end of the weekend."

It will be a test for the Roadrunners as NM State and UTRGV welcome Bakersfield to their respective cities this Friday (Oct. 18) and Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon. Both matches are set to start at 11 a.m.

With the eighth- and third-seeded teams as hosts this weekend, a pair of conference road wins could bump the Roadrunners to as high as third in conference standings depending on how the other teams fare.

"Winning on the road is very hard," added Vecchio, "and we have two very tough opponents this weekend."

Although near the bottom of the pack checking in at 0-4 in WAC action, the Aggies are 2-1-1 all-time against CSUB at home and eager for their first league win. NM State is led by junior striker Shea O'Connor who has tallied seven points (3g, 1a) on the season.

A well-oiled RGV roster is on a two-game win streak and unbeaten in conference play (2-0-1). The Vaqueros sit one win behind second-seed California Baptist (3-1) who they welcome on Friday. UTRGV is led by sophomore forward Emily Zapata. She has five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points in 2019.

Eszter Toth continues to lead CSUB in scoring with 12 points (4g, 4a) while Jordan Martinez, Chelsee Duran and Sophie Freeman are close behind with nine (4g, 1a), 8 (3g, 2a) and 7 (3g, 1a) respectively. Aryana Harvey leads the Roadrunners in assists with six. She needs one more tally to take sole possession of the Division I individual season assists lead.
