CSUB Volleyball Set For Home, Away Matches

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A quick stop at home is just what the doctor ordered for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team. The Roadrunners are preparing to host one of the Western Athletic Conference's top teams in Grand Canyon before taking a bus down to Riverside, Calif. for a match against California Baptist.

"I am happy to be back home this week," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "We have a lot to work on before we play our next two tough matches. Both GCU and CBU are playing well right now. I think being at home will help us."

The `Runners (7-11, 2-4 WAC) fought hard but suffered a pair of losses in last week's road trip to WAC-leader NM state and UTRGV. Bakersfield is looking to get back on track on Thursday, Oct. 15, when CSUB welcomes GCU (14-4, 4-2 WAC) to the Icardo Center for a 7 p.m. match.

Grand Canyon has put together a strong season so far, but split each of its last two weekends of WAC play, taking wins against Seattle U and UTRGV while falling to Utah Valley and NM State. The Lopes look to the arm of Yeny Murrilo to lead the way on offense as she posts a team-high 3.12 kills per set. Setter Klaire Mitchell runs the offense, averaging a solid 9.23 assists per set on the season.

After CSUB takes on GCU, the `Runners will have to go back out on the road, but not for long and not far. Bakersfield is slated to face off against CBU (9-10, 3-3 WAC) on the road on Monday, Oct. 21.
California Baptist comes into this week hot, taking a pair of road matches against Seattle U and Utah Valley last week. The Lancers boast a trio of big hitters in Sydney Marks, Christine Graf, and Megan Sester, each of whom average over 2.2 kills per set.

Thursday night's match in the Icardo Center will feature a special event for the `Runner volleyball program. CSUB is welcoming back former `Runners for its Alumni Night match and the team will be honoring the 30th anniversary of the 1989 squad's NCAA Division II National Championship with a special tribute video.

Both of Bakersfield's matches this week are scheduled for 7 p.m. first serves. Fans who cannot come to the Icardo Center on Thursday can watch CSUB play on WatchESPN while Monday's match will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network. Links to live stats as well as the live streams are available on the CSUB volleyball schedule page.
