`Runners Headed to Las Vegas for UNLV Dual

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After a great start to the season at the Trojan Swim Invite last week, the CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams are looking to continue early momentum into the first head-to-head dual meet of the season. On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Roadrunners will be in Las Vegas, Nev. to race against UNLV.

"We are coming off the best season opener since CSUB moved to Division I and we are hoping to ride that excitement and momentum into another great weekend against UNLV," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming.

Hansen went on to describe how he feels his two squads match up against the Rebels: "For the men, if we swim like we have been training this could be a fun and close meet. This is our first WAC meet and it has been a close meet the last two years. On paper, our women should have a tough time against UNLV, but our ladies shocked me last weekend. If they continue to swim like that, anything is possible."

On the women's side, Hansen expects a pair of underclassmen to continue performing at a high level in Mikayla Popham and Autumn D'Arcy. Popham, a freshman from Sunshine Coast, Australia, was named Western Athletic Conference Female Swimming of the Week after a standout performance at the USC meet while D'Arcy, a sophomore, reset another school record.

Hansen also said he expects junior Maddie Cosgrove and senior Jayssie Haynes to help lead the way: "Maddie and Jayssie will be crucial for us to compete with UNLV, but to win, we need a few others to step up and I think that is 100 percent possible."

For the `Runner men, Hansen is excited to see what CSUB can do against UNLV: "The men will rely on Ryan Brimer, Antonio Milin, Kris Rogic, and Loren Gillilan to dominate the swim events." Milin, a sophomore from Zadar, Croatia, joined Popham in sweeping the WAC's weekly swimming awards as he was named Male Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday.

"This is our strongest diving team in years," Hansen excitedly said of his men's divers. Freshman Sam Stinson will join Adam Estrella and Nate Cummins in the diving well and the trio looks to earn big points on the boards this season. Bakersfield's divers will see their first action of the 2019-20 season this weekend as last week's meet was for swimmers only.

The `Runners and Rebels are scheduled to kick their dual meet off at 11 a.m. in Las Vegas on Saturday. Full results and a recap will be available here on GoRunners.com Saturday afternoon.
