CSUB Returns Home For Pair Of WAC Contests

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball will return to the Icardo Center this week for a pair of Western Athletic Conference matchups when the Roadrunners welcome University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Thursday and New Mexico State University on Saturday. Tip off with the Vaqueros is set for 7 p.m. while the Aggies are on tap for 1 p.m.

UTRGV and New Mexico State enter this week with a perfect 1-0 record in league play after both teams knocked off California Baptist last week.

With a seventy-four percent all-time win record against the Vaqueros, last year's 3-0 sweep, and eight returners suiting up this Thursday, Bakersfield is the anticipated favorite however RGV has the most to prove and will come ready having closed their nonconference schedule with three top 25 opponents.

The Roadrunners have won 14 out of 19 contests played against NM State since their first meeting in 2008. The teams split regular season action 1-1 a year ago and as the No. 1 and No. 2 preseason picks will look to settle the score this week.

CSUB split opening week, picking up a win at Seattle U then falling to Utah Valley in what would have been deemed one of the best program come-from-behind wins. Bakersfield was down by as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter but ended up taking an eight-point, 70-78, loss.

Alexxus Gilbert averaged 24.5 points through the first two league matchups and leads the conference while JJ Johnson averaged 16, good enough for eighth in the WAC.
