Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Open League Action With 70-60 Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball tallied its fifth win and snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 70-60 decision over defending Western Athletic Conference tournament champions Seattle University. The Roadrnners would improve 5-9, 1-0 WAC while the Redhawks fell 0-14, 0-1 WAC on the year.

"What a way to start conference," said head coach Greg McCall. "It was a good first win for us. For the first time this season we played a complete 40 minutes and got the results we wanted. It was fun to watch. I'm very proud our team."

Bakersfield opened the first quarter with five-straight points. JJ Johnson knocked down a jump shot within the first 15 seconds of the contest before Alexxus Gilbert added a triple two minutes later. The Redhawks would close the period with their own run and lead 15-9 at the end of the period.

CSUB used the first five minutes of the second to chip away at the deficit. The score was within one with 5:00 left in the period then within two with under a minute to play, but a last possession 3-pointer from Madeline Dopplick extended the Redhawk's lead to five, 28-23, at the end of the quarter.

"I was really happy with where we were at halftime down five," explained McCall. "Seattle made a few runs in the first half when our shots stopped falling, but we continued to follow the game plan and plug away at the deficit. JJ was huge in keeping us in the game offensively through the first 20 minutes of the game."

The Roadrunners were able to chip away at the deficit again in the first five minutes of the third period. A three-point play from Johnson tied the game 36-36 with 5:04 left on the clock. There were six lead changes that followed. Johnson closed the period with a driving layup at the basket and tied the score 45-45.

"We started to knock down those shots that weren't falling in the first half," said McCall. "Alexxus had 20 of her 27 points in the second half. I was expecting her to take over the way she did. We've been talking about taking over games - winning games. She knows that I'm coming to her in the end and expecting her to make big shots."

Bakersfield scored 25 points in the fourth quarter and outscored Seattle U by 10 points, using a two-minute stretch at the end of the period to build an eight-point lead with 47 seconds left. CSUB would go to the free throw line five times in the last few possessions of the game for the final, 70-60, score.

Gilbert led CSUB in scoring for the fourth-straight contest with a career-high 27 points. Gilbert and Johnson combined for 49 points. Johnson recorded her first double-double on the year with 22 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
