Trio Medals at Southern Scuffle, `Runners Place Tenth

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three CSU Bakersfield wrestlers medaled on the final day of the 2019 Southern Scuffle.  Sean Nickell placed fourth, while Dominic Ducharme and Russell Rohlfing both placed sixth in one of the toughest tournaments of the season for the Roadrunners.  As a team, the Roadrunners placed 10th out of 26 teams.

Unseeded to begin the tournament, Ducharme clinched a spot in the podium in dominant fashion this morning.  Leading 7-0 in the third period after a trio of takedowns and racking up almost four minutes of riding time, the redshirt junior picked up his second pin of the season when he stuck Duke's Kaden Russell in the final minute of the match (6:08).

Ducharme continued his run through the consolation bracket with a wild win over Appalachian State's Alan Clothier.  Trailing 6-5 after a Clothier reversal with 30 seconds remaining in the final period, Ducharme escaped his control and it appeared things were headed to overtime with the Roadrunner already racking up one minute of riding time, but he scored the winning takedown with eight seconds remaining to advance.

In the consolation semifinals, Ducharme battled No. 8 Lou Deprez of Binghamton, but came up just short, losing 6-3 to head to the fifth-place match.  Ducharme looked as though he would trail 2-0 heading into the third period, but he reversed control with just six seconds remaining to knot the score.  After Deprez escaped to start the third, the nationally-rated wrester was hit with his second stall call to even the match at 3-3.  Deprez finished Ducharme with a takedown with just over a minute remaining and was awarded a point for riding time for the final score.  Iowa State's Sam Colbray, ranked No. 17 in the nation, defeated Ducharme for the second straight day in the fifth-place match, pinning the redshirt junior in 6:02.

It was a tough go for both Roadrunners that reached the semifinals.  Facing a pair of Oklahoma State Cowboys, CSUB's Sean Nickell and Russell Rohlfing were both defeated by technical fall.  No. 20 Nickell was knocked off by No. 6 Daton Fix and No. 15 Rohlfing was beaten by No. 12 Kaden Gfeller by identical 18-3 scores.

For the second consecutive day, Iowa State's Todd Small gave Nickell all he could handle, but for the second straight day the redshirt senior came away victorious, this time in the consolation bracket.  Nickell began the scoring with a takedown just 29 seconds into the match, but Small escaped to cut the lead in half at the end of the first.  After a scoreless second period, Nickell escaped early in the third after starting on bottom and Small picked up a point for stalling at the end of the match.

In the third-place match, Penn State's Roman Bravo-Young, ranked 15th in the nation, controlled Nickell throughout the match and scored a 10-1 major decision.

Rohlfing's struggles continued in his final two matches.  The redshirt junior was defeated by Stanford's Requir Van der Merwe by technical fall 16-0 and was pinned in a rematch of yesterday's quarterfinals by Iowa State's Jarrett Degen.  Yesterday Rohlfing defeated the No. 7 Degen 7-5 in overtime.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on January 11 when they head to Cal Poly for their second Pac-12 dual of the season.  Action in San Luis Obispo begins at 7:00 p.m.
