`Runners Drop Match At Air Force



USAFA, Colo. – The Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic got off to a slow start for the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team as the Roadrunners fell in straight sets to tournament host Air Force. CSUB battled well in two of three sets, but the Falcons overcame the `Runner rallies to earn a victory on Thursday evening.

The first set remained tight until Air Force opened a 22-15 lead over the `Runners. CSUB responded with three-straight points to make the score 22-18. The Falcons fended off the late run and took Set 1, 25-20. Senior Briannah Mariner had a team-best three kills in the set while redshirt junior Sidney Wicks posted five assists.

The Falcons jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the second set before extending that to a 19-7 advantage. Despite a late push from CSUB, Air Force earned a 25-11 victory over the `Runners. Bakersfield went to the intermission trailing 2-0 in the match.

After a quick start to Set 3 by the `Runners, Air Force battled back and gained a 13-6 lead. Trailing 21-15, CSUB made another late surge, but the Falcons once again parried the attack and took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

Sophomore Desiree Sukhov led all `Runners with six kills in the match while also adding four digs and two blocks. Senior Mattison DeGarmo chipped in five kills and three blocks of her own. Wicks, CSUB's starting setter, had 15 assists and six digs against Air Force.

​​​​​​​CSUB (2-5) will return for Day 2 of Air Force's (6-2) tournament on Friday with a matchup against Presbyterian. The `Runners and Blue Hose will face off at 4:30 p.m. (MT).
