CSUB Aims To Stay Perfect At Home, In WAC Play

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team could not have asked for a better start to Western Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners came out of the gate swinging, taking wins from the league's top two preseason favorites last weekend, and head into Saturday's clash with Utah Valley on a six-match win streak.

In order to extend that streak to seven matches, the `Runners will have to go through Utah Valley (8-8, 0-3 WAC). The Wolverines have experienced a slow start to WAC play, dropping their first three matches in the midst of a five-match skid.

UVU is not to be underestimated as a pair of powerful Wolverines represent a high hurdle for CSUB. Freshman Kazna Tarawhiti leads the WAC with 4.11 kills per set while fellow outside hitter Kristen Allred is not far behind at 3.27 kills per set.

CSUB comes into the weekend hot on the heels of a non-conference sweep over Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. Sophomore Desiree Sukhov led all `Runners with 11 kills and 10 digs, recording her third-straight double-double and fifth of the season.

On the year, Sukhov's 2.30 kills per set leads Bakersfield while senior Briannah Mariner is on her teammate's heels with 2.26 kills per set. Redshirt junior Sidney Wicks has a team-best 345 assists while sophomore libero Krista Hernandez paces the `Runners with 267 digs. Hernandez needs just 22 more digs to be ranked 10th in CSUB's Division I single-season history.

First serve of Saturday's matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Icardo Center. Fans are encouraged to come out and support CSUB's bid for seven-straight victories.
