Roadrunners Open WAC With Road Win

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team opened its Western Athletic Conference slate on Friday with a 5-2 win over Chicago State University at Gwendolyn Brooks Prep School.

"Getting points on the road is always hard and today it wasn't the exception," explained head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "We started very slow in a tough environment and we made it harder on ourselves. We showed great character in the second half."

Chicago State took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the contest when Bailey McFarland recorded her second goal on the year while teammate Samara Silva picked up the assist on goal. Redshirt senior forward Aminah Settles knotted the score at the 10:36 minute mark after the Cougars committed a foul in their own box.

The halftime score stood at 1-1 with the Roadrunners holding an 10-6 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in corners.

Redshirt freshman Evelyn Daly opened second half scoring in the 61st minute with her first collegiate goal. Settles was credited the assist on goal. Marissa Beal made her fourth goal of the season in the 63rd minute to tie the score 2-2.

Aryana Harvey lifted the score 3-2 in the 67th minute of the match before Settles tallied the insurance goal one minute later to extend the lead 4-2 with under 25 minutes left in regulation. Eszter Toth connected the fifth and final goal of the contest at the 81:20 minute mark. She was assisted by senior forward Tori VandeHoef.

The Bakersfield defense limited Chicago State to just two shots on goal in the second half while the offense finished the match with a commanding 21-6 advantage in the statistical category forcing a game-high 16 saves from the Cougars keeper.

"We were creating chances before and we created a lot today as well," said Vecchio. "It is nice to see them go in!"
