CSUB Sweeps South Dakota, Roadrunner Classic

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The challenge of facing two of the nation's Top 5 hitters at the Roadrunner Classic this week did not faze the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team. The `Runners were able to fend off each of their three opponents, closing out their home tournament on Saturday with a sweep against South Dakota.

The Coyotes proved to be a competitive match with Bakersfield, but CSUB was able to overcome its foe and finish the weekend a perfect 3-0 in the Icardo Center. The `Runners earned 25-22 wins in Set 1 and Set 2, then finished off the sweep with a 25-19 victory over USD.

In a tight first set, CSUB was able to take a slim lead at 16-11, but the Coyotes rattled off six-straight points to go ahead by one. A battle ensued with the score remaining tight to the end. From 22-22, senior Briannah Mariner recorded back-to-back kills before a South Dakota error sealed the 25-22 win for the `Runners.

Early in Set 2, Bakersfield gained an 8-3 advantage. The Coyotes battled back again, but CSUB surged to a 15-10 lead. The `Runners then went ahead 21-16, but USD would not go down without a fight, pulling within two points at 22-20. A few points later, a big kill by senior Mattison DeGarmo gave CSUB set point and another Coyote attack error ended the set, 25-22.

The third and final set of the tournament remained close through the middle of the game. CSUB was able to put together a 9-2 run to go ahead 22-14. South Dakota answered back with four straight points, but Bakersfield's quest would not be denied. The `Runners capped off the victory with a block by DeGarmo and Emily Hansen.

On the night, DeGarmo, a senior middle blocker, led all student-athletes with 11 kills on .421 hitting while adding five blocks. Mariner, an outside hitter, was close behind with 10 kills and three blocks of her own. Redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau added seven kills and three blocks for CSUB.

Redshirt junior Sidney Wicks ran the `Runner offense to the tune of 25 assists while adding six digs. Freshman Leisa Elisaia chipped in 11 kills and five digs while Krista Hernandez's 18 digs solidified a strong backline for CSUB. Freshman Milica Vukobrat added a season-high seven digs to help the `Runners hold South Dakota to just .109 hitting.

Over the course of the tournament, the `Runners were led by Mariner, who averaged 3.30 kills, 1.60 digs, and 1.30 blocks per set while converting 33.3% of her attacks for kills. For her efforts, the native of Salt Lake City, Utah earned Tournament MVP honors.

While the well-balanced `Runner offense saw contributions up and down the lineup, DeGarmo and Desiree Sukhov joined Mariner on the All-Tournament team. DeGarmo tallied 2.50 kills and 1.20 blocks per set over the week. Sukhov, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., was close behind with 2.3 kills, 0.5 aces, 1.7 digs, and 0.5 blocks per game.

CSUB (6-6) will enjoy the comforts of the Icardo Center again next week. The `Runners will begin Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 20, against UT Rio Grande Valley. On Saturday, Bakersfield will welcome NM State. CSUB knocked off NMSU in last season's WAC Tournament semifinal before taking down host UTRGV in the final to win the conference title.
