Golden Goal Lifts Roadrunners Over SMC In Double OT

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Roadrunner fans did not leave Main Soccer Field disappointed Friday night as the CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's College (Calif.) 1-0 in double-overtime to improve 2-5-0 on the season.

"I was very proud of our team tonight because of the effort and character they showed," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio.

Saint Mary's was in attack most of the first period with a 7-3 advantage in shots, but Bakersfield was always in position to alter a shot and when needed Jordan Bertram was there to make a timely save. Bertram lead the contest in saves at the half.

The Roadrunners' offense came alive in the second period. Bakersfield took 11 shots and limited the Gaels to four. The SMC keeper had to make five saves in the last 45 minutes of regulation to keep the match scoreless and force an overtime period.

"The keys for us were to be consistent in what we do for the majority of the game," explained Vecchio, "and become the aggressors in the second half."

Bakersfield continued to present a well-rounded performance in the first overtime period. CSUB took five shots, four on goal and the backline didn't allow the SMC offense to get a shot off.

Redshirt senior forward Aminah Settles sent a ball through four Gael jerseys to connect with senior midfielder Sabrina Delgado who scored the golden goal of the contest in the 105th minute to end the match.

This is the second straight season CSUB has defeated SMC in extra periods. The Roadrunners now own the all-time series 4-1-2.

NEXT UP

"If we keep focusing on ourselves," added Vecchio. "We'll be looking to have two good performances back to back."
