Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

`Runners Edged By Campbell In 5 Sets

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the second-straight match, CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team played all five sets against its opponent at the Aztec Invitational. After Friday's dramatic, 3-2 victory over host San Diego State, the Roadrunners continued their momentum on Saturday against Campbell. After CSUB took the first two sets easily, the Camels fought back and the `Runners were unable to hold on for the win, falling 15-13 in the fifth set.

Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB, said that she felt her team became complacent after the quick start: "We just got comfortable. I am not happy with the way we played the last three games. Even though we were battling, we weren't focused and were very undisciplined. We need to get more consistent and our serve receive needs to improve."

The match started tightly, but the `Runners were able to build a lead of four points at 16-12. After Campbell came within one point at 17-16, Bakersfield won the final eight points to close out the opening set with a 25-16 victory. CSUB was swinging from all angles as five `Runners had at least two kills in the set. Sophomore Desiree Sukhov recorded four kills in the game while fellow sophomore Krista Hernandez had nine digs.

The momentum from winning the first game carried straight into Set 2 as CSUB streaked to an 8-1 lead behind back-to-back blocks from redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau and senior Briannah Mariner. The `Runners widened the gap to as many as 13 points and finished the game with another 25-16 win. The offense remained well balanced as six `Runners had three kills or more to that point.

Campbell sprinted out of the break to the tune of a 7-2 lead, forcing a CSUB timeout early in Set 3. The `Runners clawed back in and got as close as two points at 18-16, but Campbell held on for a 25-18 win. The fourth set fared the same as the Camels surged ahead early. Despite a strong run from CSUB, Campbell forced a deciding set with a 25-20 victory.

In the fifth set, both teams went toe-to-toe with Campbell holding on to a narrow lead. The Camels were ahead 10-6 when CSUB called a timeout. Junior transfer Rafa Bonifacio put a kill down and back-to-back Campbell errors brought the `Runners within one points.

After a timeout from the Camels, CSUB tied the score up at 10-10 on a kill by redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau. One final push gave the Camels the narrow margin they needed to take the set win, 15-13, and the match victory 3-2.

On the day, Sukhov led all `Runners with 12 kills while Boiseau and sophomore Emily Hansen were close behind with 11 each. Hansen's clip of .444 was an impressive performance for the Bakersfield native while Hernandez posted a career-high 24 digs in the match. Redshirt senior Mattison DeGarmo chipped in six kills and eight blocks on Saturday.

Campbell, a squad that won 20 matches in 2017 and went to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, was led by 16 kills from both Jessica Stocking and Sarah Colla.

CSUB (1-2) will return to Bakersfield to rest and prepare for next weekend's invitational. The `Runners will head to the UC Irvine Tournament to face off against tough competition like Texas Tech, Georgia, and host UCI.
