`Runner Ready Program: SALA Receives Highest Student-Athlete Approval



BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –Twenty-four student-athletes attended the fourth annual CSU Bakersfield Student-Athlete Leadership Academy held Friday, July 13 through Sunday, July 15 at the Kegley Center For Student Success. 
                                          
"Each head coach chose two student-athletes to represent their team," explained `Runner Ready Program Coordinator Doc Waller. "Attendance is a one-time deal. Student-athletes are given the opportunity to listen to, discuss with, and learn from a diverse group of leaders from the community."
 
Piloted in summer of 2015, the three-day leadership academy training is intended to help student-athletes explore, discuss, and apply skills, available resources, and strategies that are applicable during and after their collegiate careers. 
 
"Everyone came with an open mind to new ideas and were challenged," added Waller.
 
This year the academy agenda featured 12 keynote speakers, as well as bonding and skill building activities held off campus including, bowling at The BLVD, a ropes challenge course at CALM and dinner at Outback Steakhouse. 
 
 "I think the social activities added value to the overall academy experience," said Waller. "I got nothing but positive feedback. Students even gave the highest ratings for academy keynote speakers to-date."

The coaches chose some great representatives, and I am looking forward to an exciting 2018-19 with these leaders in our programs.
