CSUB Falls To WAC Leader NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team closed out its first Western Athletic Conference road series of the season with a doubleheader against New Mexico State on Saturday. The Aggies jumped out early in both games against the `Runners and NMSU earned a pair of victories and the series sweep.

While the `Runners hit well throughout the series, CSUB's Head Coach, Crissy Buck-Ziegler, knows her team's potential is high: "I believe we could have hit even better. I really like how cohesive we are playing as a team. Seattle U is playing well and they are going to be tough. We have to work on a couple of things to prepare for them, but we will be ready."

Game 1

The Aggies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off Kelsey Horton's solo home run in the first inning. Freshman Daryn Hitzel returned to the circle and retired five straight Aggies to keep the `Runners in the game.

In the third inning, NM State exploded for six runs on four hits and an error. The Aggies surged ahead to a 7-0 lead as Victoria Castro's two-run homer capped the scoring. NMSU would add on one more run in the fourth and finish off the run-rule win.

Hitzel (3-6) took the loss against NMSU while Analise De La Roca improved to 7-2 with the victory. CSUB right fielder Ariana Felix went 2-for-2 from the plate as the bright spot of the game for the `Runners. Fellow freshman Ariana Acedo and second baseman Chris Hipa were both 1-for-2 in Game 1.

Game 2

NM State used a pair of first-inning runs to gain another early lead on the `Runners. Sophomore Nikki Butler hurt CSUB again as her two-RBI double gave the catcher her fourth RBI of the game. The Aggies tacked on another run in the second and two in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Junior Chris Hipa came on to relieve for the `Runners and kept the Aggies off the board in the fourth and fifth innings. Hipa led off the top of the sixth with a single and junior Paige Johnson followed that up with a single of her own. Pinch hitter Evelyn Mendoza's single loaded the bases with one out, but NMSU starter Kayla Green got the next two `Runners out to escape the jam.

Down to its final three outs, Bakersfield started a seventh-inning rally. Cavazos reached base safely for the fourth time in the game with a one-out walk. A throwing error by NMSU's infield put `Runners on the corners with two outs, but the Aggies ended the threat with a grounder. NMSU was able to hold on for the 5-0 lead to complete the sweep over the `Runners.

Cavazos, a senior outfielder, was 2-for-2 from the plate in Game 2 to go with a pair of walks. The Aggies were unable to retire CSUB's offensive leader, who continues to lead the `Runners with a .356 batting average and a .500 on-base percentage. Cavazos' walks broke her tie for the CSUB Division I career record as the senior now has 49 base on balls. CSUB outhit the Aggies for the second time in the series, 7-4, but left 10 `Runners on base in the effort.

NMSU's Samaria Diaz (3-6) earned the win for NMSU while Hitzel (3-7) took another loss after pitching two innings. Hipa, a junior utility player, allowed just two runs over four innings of work.

Next Week

CSUB (5-28, 2-4 WAC) will return to Bakersfield next week to host Seattle U (27-17, 5-1 WAC) at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. The `Runners and Redhawks will play a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 13, followed by a single game to close the series on Saturday.
