`Runners Fall In 10-Inning Thriller, WAC Doubleheader

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A school record was broken and a bang-bang play at the plate decided a game's outcome in an exciting Western Athletic Conference doubleheader for the Roadrunner softball team on Friday. CSU Bakersfield suffered a pair of losses on the day against the Seattle U Redhawks.

A controversial call at home kept the `Runners from tying the first game in the bottom of the 10th inning as Seattle U went on to take a 4-3 victory. The second game started out right, but SU opened it up in the middle innings and finished off a 6-0 win.

"I thought we fought really well," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We kept coming back and had the runner in scoring position. I thought we scored the run at the end, but it was a judgment call…There's nothing that we can be mad about. I thought Summer pitched a great game. She gutted it out for nine innings and they had to go through three pitchers to get the W."

With a stolen base in the first inning of Game 1 and a third-inning steal in the second game, senior Kaylynn Burt's career total rose to 34. The outfielder passed former `Runner Karissa Veiga (2011-14) and is now CSUB's Division I career record holder.

After the game, Burt talked about her career and strategy for stealing bases: "It's definitely not a goal I set when I came here. When I came in, Coach Buck knew that I was fast and that I could reach that. She set the bar high for me and I just took what she taught me and ran with it. Brendon teaches us a lot in the weight run about the trajectory of our jump. I just run hard like I'm going to run into second with flames."

Another highlight of the game was CSUB's infield, which came into the series ranked 20th in the nation in double plays per game. The `Runners were able to turn three more double plays on Friday, an impressive feet with 60-foot base paths.

Game 1

Three bloop singles and a walk helped Seattle U take an early, 1-0 on the `Runners in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, CSUB starter Summer Evans caught a Redhawk looking and induced an inning-ending double play to get the `Runners out of the jam.

Senior Julea Cavazos led off the bottom half of the first with a single up the middle. An error put `Runners on the corners and another error would later allow Cavazos and Kaylynn Burt to score. After Ariana Acedo's blast down the left field went just barely foul, the Redhawks escaped the inning trailing the `Runners 2-1.
Continuing their small ball ways, the Redhawks scored another run in the top of the second to tie the score. In the third, a passed ball moved a runner into scoring position for SU and Cherise Silvan's RBI single gave the Redhawks a 3-2 lead.

The `Runners rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score up a three runs apiece. Jocelyn Betancourt led off the frame with a four-pitch walk, then a Karah Wiseman drew a walk on a 15-pitch at bat. Betancourt's pinch runner, Halle Neher, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and was driven home on an RBI single by Cavazos.

A pitchers' duel ensued and both Evans and SU's Carley Nance held the opposing offenses scoreless through the ninth inning. The Redhawks finally broke through in the 10th on Maddy Kristjanson's go-ahead, solo home run. Seattle U went on to load the bases after that, but freshman Daryn Hitzel pitched the `Runners out of the jam, keeping the score at 4-3.

Paige Johnson led the bottom of the 10th off with a single and moved to second on Ariana Acedo's grounder. A ground ball went through the legs of the shortstop and Johnson rounded third looking to tie the game. A close play at the plate ended with the umpire beginning to signal safe, but changing his mind and calling Johnson out on the play as the game ended in dramatic fashion.

Evans took a tough loss after pitching 9.1 innings while SU's Carley Nance earned the victory in five innings of relief. Cavazos and Wiseman each tallied two hits for the `Runners while the latter reached base three times thanks to the epic walk in the sixth.

Game 2
The game was tight through the first two innings, but Seattle U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The Redhawks tacked on two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead to 5-0. Cherise Silvan's RBI single in the top of the seventh capped the scoring for CSUB as the Redhawks earned a 6-0 win.

Hitzel pitched a complete game for the `Runners, but took the loss as SU's Shianne Smith left the game with a lead after five innings. Wiseman added another hit in Game 2 to finish the day 3-for-7 from the plate. Second baseman Chris Hipa was 2-for-3 in the second game while Betancourt, the designated player, added a hit as well.

???????CSUB put at least one `Runner on base in every inning except for the seventh, but left eight stranded in the losing effort. Coach Buck mentioned leaving runners on base as one of the things her team will be working on: "We have to score when we have runners on. That's the name of the game. We gotta clutch up when we need to."

The `Runners (5-30, 2-6 WAC) and Redhawks (29-17, 7-1 WAC) will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex to close out the series with one final contest. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
