`Runners Drop Series Opener Against WAC Leader NMSU, 4-2

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Roadrunner softball team kicked off the road portion of its Western Athletic Conference schedule with a matchup against the league's top team on Friday night. CSU Bakersfield jumped out to an early lead against New Mexico State, but eventually fell to the Aggies, 4-2.

"I thought it was a very good game," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We have to clutch up with runners in scoring position. We need to make the proper adjustments tomorrow." CSUB outhit NMSU 8-6, but nine `Runners left on base stifled Bakersfield's comeback efforts.

The `Runners sprinted out of the gate in Las Cruces, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Julea Cavazos led off with a single and was joined on base after Kaylynn Burt's walk. With one out, Paige Johnson's RBI single scored Cavazos before freshman Ariana Acedo drove in Burt with her RBI double.

???????NMSU answered right back in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score up at 2-2. After a lead-off single, Kelsey Horton hit a two-run blast to right field. CSUB starter Summer Evans shook off the early struggles and retired six out of the next seven Aggies.

In the bottom of the third, NM State broke through again to score two more runs. The long ball hurt Evans and the `Runners again as another two-run homer gave the Aggies a 4-2 lead.

The game turned into a pitchers' duel after that as Evans and NMSU's tag team of pitchers held their opposing offenses scoreless through the end of the game. Evans (1-14) took the loss after another strong performance against one of the WAC's top offenses. The senior pitched a complete game, allowing four runs off just six hits and one walk while striking out three Aggies.

Offensively, two `Runners tallied a pair of hits on Friday in Johnson and sophomore catcher Karah Wiseman. Cavazos went 1-for-3 from the plate with a walk while shortstop Cydney Curran was 1-for-2 with a walk as well.

Bakersfield (5-26, 2-2 WAC) will return to face NMSU (19-15, 4-0 WAC) in a pair of games on Saturday. The doubleheader will kick off at 3 p.m. (PT). The first game will be streamed live on ESPN3.com while only live stats will be available for Game 2.
