CSUB Suffers Pair Of 1-Run Losses Against UVU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of hard-fought games resulted in a pair of one-run losses for CSU Bakersfield's softball team on Friday. The Roadrunners let a late lead slip against Utah Valley in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader while CSUB was unable to complete a comeback in Game 2.

"We didn't put our foot on the gas," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners, about her team letting the first game get away. "We got content and sat back. We've got to continue to put pressure on and put people on base."

Buck-Ziegler mentioned that the offensive woes were present in the second game as well, but CSUB's pitchers did well to keep their team in both games: "I thought Daryn threw a really good game. I thought Summer threw a good game, too. She's tired right now at the end of a long season. She's upset at herself for letting that lead slip away, but we've got to do a better job of having her back."

Game 1

The Wolverines jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. An error prolonged the inning and a sacrifice fly followed by a groundout RBI gave UVU its two runs.

CSUB answered right back with a big bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back RBI singles from Ariana Acedo and Paige Johnson tied the score at two runs apiece. Junior Chris Hipa then ripped a triple down the right field line to put the `Runners ahead 3-2.

In the bottom of the second, a pair of Wolverine errors helped the `Runners extend their lead. After sophomore Karah Wiseman's grounder drove in a run for CSUB, a poor throw allowed Bakersfield to plate another run and take a 5-2 advantage.

The `Runner momentum rolled into the third as Johnson led the frame off with a walk. Hipa kept her hot-hitting ways going, sending a fly ball to the opposite field for the eighth home run of her career. The dinger tied the junior for fifth in CSUB's Division I career history.

UVU battled back to plate a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Madison Sisco's two-RBI single cut the deficit as the `Runners found themselves ahead by a score of 7-4.

Down to their final three outs, the Wolverines battled back to regain the lead. UVU scored four runs in the seventh behind Kaylee Bott's three-run home run. In the bottom half of the seventh, Johnson singled with two outs, but the `Runners were unable to tie the score up and fell, 8-7.

Hipa's offense led the `Runners as the second baseman was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game. Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 and was one of three `Runners to tally one RBI. Senior Summer Evans took the loss after pitching a complete game and allowing six earned runs.

Game 2

The `Runners sprinted out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Cydney Curran went from first to third on a Johnson single and wound up scoring thanks to a UVU error.

Freshman Daryn Hitzel pitched a gem for the `Runners, but the Wolverines finally caught up to her in the middle of the game. UVU plated a run in the third and fourth innings, taking a 2-1 lead. Hitzel shook off the stumble and retired 10 out of the last 11 batters of the game to keep CSUB in the hunt.

In the bottom of the seventh, the `Runners got a lead-off base hit out of Acedo, but she was thrown out trying to stretch her single into a double. The CSUB offense was unable to muster a late comeback and eventually fell, 2-1.

Wiseman was 0-for-1 at the plate but reached base twice with a pair of walks in Game 2. Curran, Johnson, and Acedo tallied one hit each for the `Runners, who struggled to get their offense rolling. Hitzel finished with a complete-game loss, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out four Wolverines.

CSUB (6-35, 3-11 WAC) and UVU (18-23, 9-4 WAC) will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Saturday to complete the series with one final game. With Saturday's game being the regular-season finale, the `Runners will celebrate their seniors 10 minutes before the 1 p.m. first pitch.
