Softball Drops Utah Valley Series Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner softball team was unable to rally late as CSU Bakersfield (6-36, 3-13 WAC) dropped its Western Athletic Conference regular season finale to Utah Valley (19-24, 10-4 WAC) on Saturday, 7-2.

UVU posted a two-RBI home run in the top of the first to give the Wolverines a quick 2-0 start. The visiting team extended its lead 3-0 in the top of the second off a solo shot RBI home run.

Kaylynn Burt posted a triple in the bottom of the second with two outs, her fourth of the season and team-best. Julea Cavazos walked the following play, but Lauren Frailey would retire the next batter to prevent Burt from scoring.

The `Runners put together a string of nice defensive plays in the top of the third to leave three Wolverines stranded and keep the deficit at three.

Chris Hipa reentered the game as pitcher after two single-RBI triples and a RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. She and Cavazos retired the next three batters from the mound and center field, respectively. Hipa struck out her first batter faced, while Cavazos collected the next two outs in center field.

Burt scored in the bottom of the fourth off Cavazos' stolen bag to second. Bakersfield scored once more in the bottom of the fifth when Arianna Felix hit her first collegiate home run to cut the deficit 6-2.

Utah Valley tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a RBI single for the final 7-2 score.

The `Runners will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. next week for the WAC Tournament. All six teams will advance to the double-elimination tournament at the New Mexico State Softball Complex.
