6-Run 2nd Inning Leads CSUB To Victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a slow start to its series finale, CSU Bakersfield's softball team exploded for a six-run inning against Western Athletic Conference foe Kansas City. The Roadrunners held off a late rally from the Kangaroos on Saturday en route to a 10-6 road victory.

"We hit the ball well today," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "Summer, Daryn, and Chris all combined to get the win. We just played well together."

The Roos got out to a quick start as a two-run homer put UMKC ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Kansas City looked primed to add on to its lead with bases-loaded and one out, but the `Runners made a pair of nice defensive plays to get out of the jam.

CSUB answered right back, putting a pair of `Runners in scoring position with just one out in the top of the second. Kaylynn Burt's two-RBI triple tied the score up and started a big rally. Bakersfield's senior moved into second in CSUB's Division I history with six career triples on the play.

Fellow senior Julea Cavazos continued the big inning with an RBI single to give CSUB a 3-2 lead. Karah Wiseman followed that up with an RBI single of her own and Cydney Curran's third triple of the season scored another run. Ariana Acedo's RBI single capped the scoring to put the `Runners ahead of the Roos, 6-2. The big inning was CSUB's second of the season in which the squad scored six runs or more.

UMKC got a run back in the bottom of the third, making the score 6-3, but the `Runners shook off the stumble as freshman Daryn Hitzel went on a run in which she retired eight of nine Roos that came to the plate.

An error by UMKC in the top of the fourth gave Wiseman the chance to drive in her second RBI, pushing the CSUB lead to 7-3. In the top of the sixth, Wiseman recorded her third RBI of the game, a new career-high for the sophomore catcher, in the middle of another big inning for the `Runners. After Curran's RBI single, Wiseman scored on a wild pitch to put the `Runners ahead 10-3.

The Roos were not content to go down without a fight, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. UMKC plated a pair of runs before an error allowed a third to come around and score. Leading 10-6, the `Runners finally got the third out of the frame.

Junior Chris Hipa was called to the circle to close out the game. CSUB's utility player allowed one Roo to reach base safely, but Hipa shut the door to seal the victory for the `Runners. Hitzel, a freshman, earned her fourth win of the seaosn after throwing four inning in relief. Evans pitched two innings from the start to help set up CSUB with the lead.

Wiseman was 2-for-5 on the day with three RBI while Curran also added a pair of hits with her two RBI. Johnson was 3-for-4 on Saturday as CSUB saw hits from 8-of-9 batting spots while also tallying five walks.

Hitzel pitched eight innings in two relief appearances in Kansas City and earned the win for the `Runners on Saturday. Johnson went 5-for-9 on the weekend while posting a .600 on-base percentage to lead the CSUB offense against the Roos.

With the win, CSUB (6-33, 3-9 WAC) will head back to Bakersfield with one week left in the regular season. The `Runners will play host to a strong Utah Valley squad next weekend with Senior Day set for Saturday, Apr. 28.
