Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – CSU Bakersfield outscored UTRGV 22-7 in the second quarter as the 'Runners defeated UTRGV 70-59 in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday night in the Orleans Arena.
 
The Roadrunners (17-12) were down two (20-18) at the end of the first quarter after Krisynthia Sampson made a layup at the buzzer. CSUB responded immediately at the start of the second quarter with an individual 5-0 run from Malayasia McHenry that kick started the game changing run that proved to be the difference.
 
Three different players scored for the 'Runners to increase the lead to 38-22 before Quynne Huggins scored to end Bakersfield's 20-2 run. At the end of the second quarter, CSUB led 40-27. The 'Runners edged the Vaqueros 16-15 in the third quarter to hold a 56-42 lead going into the last 10 minutes of regulation. UTRGV outscored CSU Bakersfield 17-14 in the fourth for the final 70-59 score.
 
The 'Runners (14-16) outshot the Vaqueros 35.0 percent (21-of-60) to 28.1 percent (18-of-64). UTRGV outrebounded CSUB 51-40, but Bakersfield grabbed 15 steals and scored 30 points off 20 forced turnovers.
 
Jazmine Johnson scored a game-high 23 points, while McHenry added 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Roadrunners. Megan Johnson and Huggins led UTRGV as each scored 14 points.
 
CSU Bakersfield, the No. 2 seed, takes on No. 3 Grand Canyon on Friday in the WAC semifinals at Noon. The Lopes used a 14-3 run that started in the third and carried over to the fourth quarter of their quarterfinal game against sixth seed, Utah Valley, to defeat the Wolverines 72-56.
