Box Score LAS VEGAS – An 18-14 fourth quarter edge led Seattle U past CSU Bakersfield 57-54 in the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Orleans Arena.
It was a game of runs, with 11 ties and 19 lead changes. The Redhawks took a 14-12 lead through the first 10 minutes of play, but the 'Runners would take both the second (13-11) and third (15-14) quarters to take a 40-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Down 55-47 with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter, the Roadrunners went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one (55-54). Seattle U capitalized on two free-throws with 0.22 seconds left in the game to lift the Redhawks 57-54. The 'Runners were able to create two great scoring opportunities to send the game into overtime, but came up short which resulted in the final 57-54 score.
Kamira Sanders, the tournament MVP, scored a game-high 20-points. Alexis Montgomery added 15 points to earn a spot on the WAC All-Tournament team.
Jazmyne Bartee led the 'Runners with 15 points, while
Malayasia McHenry grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Jazmine Johnson chipped in 12 points to round out the 'Runners double-digit scoring as she and McHenry were named to the All-Tournament team.
CSU Bakersfield anticipates an invitation to the WBI and may have an opportunity to host Wednesday, Mar. 14 or Thursday, Mar. 15. The athletic department will be looking for ticket sponsors to support the home event and ensure a great Bakersfield home crowd for our team.
