CSUB Will Welcome Tough Conference Opponents NMSU and UTRGV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif –CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team have a tough weekend ahead continuing their second leg of the season. The Roadrunners are set to play against the defending WAC Tournament Champions New Mexico State in the battle for first place while ending the weekend on Saturday against UTRGV in the Icardo Center.

"Thursday's game says it all," said Greg McCall, head coach of CSUB's women's basketball. "It could be the game of the year for us, we are excited about the moment and I can tell by our intensity. They are practicing extremely hard, they are getting after it, they are being competitive. This is a big game for us, one versus two and this gives us the opportunity to put ourselves in a first place position and keep it rolling."

Thursday night's game will feature the Aggies playing at Bakersfield's golden game. The `Runners will face off against current conference leaders, NMSU for a rematch earlier in the season. Last time the two teams met the Aggies defeated CSUB late in the final four minutes of the game for the No. 1 position in the conference. A couple of weeks later and both teams will once again be battling to put themselves back in a first place position in the regular season. The New Mexico State team will come to Bakersfield averaging 69 points per game and leading the conference in blocked shots.

Saturday, CSUB will welcome UTRGV on its pink game. The Vaqueros come to Bakersfield with a 11-11, 1-6 WAC record and even though they are not right on CSUB's tail in games, UTRGV almost defeated the `Runners in an overtime battle earlier this season. As a team, the Vaqueros are right behind CSUB leading the conference in scoring defense with 62.3 points per game and are averaging 62.9 points per game.

Coach McCall went on to discuss about how important this weekend is to the team and fans, "This weekend is going to be big, you always want to protect your own house. We know these rims, we know the floor and it's a great opportunity for us to show our fans we can play in front of a big crowd and hopefully we do have one! Having a big crowd can really help us elevate ourselves. We want to outright win this thing during the regular conference season and this would be a huge step in the right direction for our program. "

The `Runners will look to keep their momentum from last weekend's wins by keeping a strong defense and maintaining a steady offense. Currently, CSUB holds their opponents defensively to 56.3 points per game and are currently ranked #24 in the nation in scoring defense and #60 with 18.64 turnovers forced.

CSUB will play its Golden Game against New Mexico State on Thursday, Feb. 8 for a scheduled tip-off at 7 p.m. and then UTRGV on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 pm. for it Pink Game. The Roadrunners are expecting a big crowd for both games and would like to get as many CSUB and Bakersfield fans to pack the Icardo Center!
