'Runners Fall In Extra innings At St. Mary's

Moraga, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team was looking to avoid the sweep against St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon after losing a couple tight games in a doubleheader yesterday.  And today would be no different.  The Gaels would get the sweep with a 5-4 victory that would take eight innings to decide a winner.

The Roadrunners would jump on top of the Gaels right out of the gate.  Cydney Curran would lead off the game with a leadoff double and freshman Gabrielle Fua would follow with an RBI single and bam, just like that, the 'Runners had a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.

CSUB's Summer Evans would get the start and the Gaels would get to her in the bottom of the first with a bases loaded two run double and St. Mary's had the lead after one.

The `Runners would tie the game in the second with a RBI single by Kaylynn Burt and the game was tied at two.

Curran would stay hot for the `Runners and with two outs in the fourth would drive in two with a double to left center and CSUB had the lead 4-2.

Evans would go four innings and only allowed those two first inning runs and she would give way to freshman Daryn Hitzel.

The Gaels would scratch out two runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Hitzel and the game would be tied at four heading to the seventh.

And the fans at St. Mary's would get some free softball in this series finale on a beautiful Sunday afternoon as neither team could score in the seventh.

But a two out RBI single from St. Mary's in the bottom of the eighth and the Gaels would get the walkoff win and earn the sweep.

Hitzel would go 3 2/3, allowing five hits and three runs in the loss.  Julea Cavazos continues to hit and hit and hit.  The senior, who leads the team in hits, would add two more to her collection today.

CSUB falls to 1-12 on the year, while St. Mary's improves to 3-11 after the weekend sweep.

The `Runners will be back in action March 3-4 when CSUB host's Sacramento State for their home opening series of the season.
