CSUB Softball Drops Both Games Of Saturday's Doubleheader

MORAGA, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's softball team continued its season with a doubleheader against Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Saturday. The Roadrunners dropped both games to the Gaels, but will have one more chance to take a victory on Sunday.

Game 1

After giving up runs in the first and third innings, the `Runners battled back to make the score 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Junior Chris Hipa's RBI double plated sophomore Karah Wiseman to give the `Runners their first score of the game.

In the bottom half of the fourth, three CSUB errors helped the Gaels score two more runs. The `Runners were able to put at least one person on base in each of the next two innings, but CSUB was unable to capitalize on its opportunities and fell by a score of 4-1.

Senior Summer Evans pitched well, allowing just six hits and four runs, three of which were unearned. Besides Hipa's double, first baseman Jocelyn Betancourt and centerfielder Julea Cavazos recorded CSUB's other two hits. Freshman had two plate appearances and two walks against the Gaels.

Game 2

Saint Mary's jumped out to a quick, 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Another pair in the bottom of the fifth had the Gaels ahead 6-0 before CSUB started a late rally.

In the top of the sixth inning, Fua started the surge with a leadoff single. Cavazos' double put two `Runners in scoring position and Betancourt singled to center field to plate them both.

CSUB put another pair of `Runners on base in the top of the seventh, but could not continue the rally and fell by a score of 6-2. Freshman Daryn Hitzel got the start in the circle in Game 2 and pitched a complete six innings. She allowed just four earned runs in the loss.

The `Runners got a pair of hits each from sophomore Cydney Curran and Fua while Maddi Clark's hit from the designated player's spot was rounded out the seven total hits.

CSUB fell to 1-11 on the season with the pair of losses. The `Runners will go back out to the diamond looking for their second win of the season on Sunday.
