CSUB To Face Off Against GCU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team will travel to Arizona to take on the Antelopes for a single game this week. The Roadrunners are looking to add another conference win on Saturday afternoon to stay in position for first place finish this season.

"Each opponent that we are facing are the biggest challenges," said Greg McCall, head coach of CSUB's women's basketball team. "We have to take one game at a time and start with Grand Canyon this week and keep coming out focused. It's going to be a tough game because we are going to Arizona first to play them. They are playing pretty well right now and they are coming off a huge win against New Mexico State just like we did."

Bakersfield will go toe to toe against Grand Canyon for the first time this season. The Antelopes will welcome CSUB with a 13-11, 7-3 (WAC) record just one game behind the `Runners in conference. As a team, GCU are No.1 (WAC) in three-pointers made (8.0 ppg) and lead in free throws (.738). The team is led by senior Brie Mobley who has 18.1 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game and averaging 4.1 assists. Other Lopes that are contributing to the team are redshirt senior Jessica Gajewski averaging 14.5 points per game with 38 steals on the season while redshirt senior August Touchard with 10.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

Despite the Lopes being only one game behind, the `Runners will look to keep their momentum from last weekend's wins by keeping a strong defense and maintaining a steady offense. Currently, CSUB holds their opponents defensively to 55 points per game and are currently ranked #11 in the nation in scoring defense and #58 with 18.54 turnovers forced.

Coach McCall went on to discuss about the week ahead, "We are going to focus on our ourselves and look at what they do to get us prepared for this game. The team will make sure that each girl is well prepared for where GCU's strengths are. It's only one game behind us for the top three teams, we are one game away from being in that next slot so we have no wiggle room for mistakes and we need to be on our A game all the way through the next four games. This is the first time in my whole career of being here that the team is in control of where we stand in the conference leading to post season."

CSUB will tip off at 2 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Grand Canyon. Roadrunners fans can catch the action live and follow live stats by finding the links attached to the women's basketball schedule page.
