Athletics Receives Major Gift From Kern Schools

February 15, 2018

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – California State University Bakersfield ("CSUB" or "CSU Bakersfield") and Kern Schools Federal Credit Union ("Kern Schools") are proud to announce a major gift contribution that will result in a renovation of the basketball court and other improvements in The Icardo Center.

Upgrades such as this are central to the CSUB Athletics strategic plan and master plan for athletics facilities. Such enhancements contribute to improving the student-athlete experience as well as engaging the Bakersfield community, two of CSUB Athletics' foundational pillars.

Known nationwide for being the only blue basketball court in NCAA Division I, in appreciation for their continued support and contributions, the renovated floor will be known as "Kern Schools Court".

CSUB's Director of Athletics, Kenneth "Ziggy" Siegfried, noted the importance of this generous gift: "Kern Schools gives in so many ways to our University. They invest financially to the two most important pillars in our department. They also invest by hiring CSUB students and CSUB student-athletes after graduation. And last, but not least, they invest by giving their time and showing their presence at University functions and athletic events."

An active and long-time supporter of Roadrunner Athletics, Kern Schools' President/CEO, Steve Renock, explained why they wanted to partner with the Roadrunners on this project stating, "Kern Schools is excited to assist CSU Bakersfield on this new project. Continued support of the University will strengthen the relationship between our two organizations but, more importantly, will help to enrich the lives of student-athletes at CSU Bakersfield as well as the entire community."

"I want to thank the Kern Schools Board, Staff, and Steve Renock for their continued investment to CSUB and the CSUB Athletics Department," Siegfried said. "Their impact on Kern County is substantial."

The court's renovation is scheduled to begin in spring of 2018 and will be completed in time for the 2018-19 season.
