Mutai Earns Top 10 Finish at Wolverine Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – The Cal State Bakersfield Golf team completed their first tournament of the 2025-26 season at the Wolverine Invitational. Bakersfield finished in 6th place in a field of 10 teams, jumping up one spot after last year’s performance at the same tournament. The Roadrunners were just four strokes behind Utah Valley, but finished higher than Lamar, Southern Utah, Westminister, and Idaho State.

Sarah Mutai had an amazing first day, playing 36-holes leading to a top 10 finish on the individual leaderboard. In the final round, Iris Han, Anna Kehrer, Kate Montemayor, and newcomer Rena Kaneko all climbed the leaderboard. Montemayor was the biggest mover, jumping nine spots and rounding on the afternoon with a 73 (+1).

Kaneko finished her debut round as a Roadrunner with a score 75 (+3), just one stroke off from tying teammate Anna Kehrer’s record set last year of 74 (+2), also at the Wolverine Invitational. After 54-holes, the Redlands transfer finished just two strokes behind teammate Sarah Mutai who has the best `Runner debut 54-hole score, finishing with a score of 227 (+11).

As a team, this performance was CSUB’s second-best finish in a 54-hole tournament finishing with a score of 884 (+20). Last year at the Wolverine Invitational the team finished with a score of 899 (+35), the `Runners saw a 15-stroke improvement this time around.

The Roadrunners will be back in action Sept. 22-23 at the Kalispel Invitational in Spokane, Washington, hosted by Eastern Washington.
