'Runners Finish Opening Weekend In Heartbreaking Fashion

San Diego, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team wrapped up their five game opening season tournament against host San Diego on Sunday afternoon.  The `Runners would get a great outing on the mound, but a walkoff two run homerun by San Diego in the bottom of the seventh would earn USD the 4-2 win.

The `Runners would turn to Kaycee Olson and her 1.17 ERA through the first four games of the season.  The redshirt freshman from Bakersfield had come out of the pen so far this season, but she would get the nod for the start on Sunday.

San Diego would strike first by scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the first after the `Runners left the bases loaded in the top half of the inning.  But CSUB would get one right back in the top of the second when senior Julea Cavazos would draw a bases loaded walk for an RBI to make it 2-1.  CSUB would leave the bases loaded in the first two innings, but did get one across.

The top of the fourth, the `Runners would load the bases once again, but could not get the big hit and USD would hold on to their 2-1 lead.  Olson continued to throw up scoreless frames and we headed to the seventh with the `Runners needing to scratch out a run.

And that is exactly what they did.  Cavazos drew a leadoff walk and with one out and Cavazos at third, sophomore Karah Wiseman would put the ball in play and an error on USD's shortstop tied the game at 2-2.

But San Diego would hit a 2 run walkoff homerun with one out in the seventh to defeat CSUB 4-2.

Olson would take the loss, but pitched an absolute gem allowing only two earned runs and striking out three.

The `Runners will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Fresno, Calif. for another five game, three day tournament at the Bulldog Classic.
