'Runners Lose On Last Second Tip In At UTRGV

Box Score EDINBURG, TX – Roadrunner redshirt junior Damiyne Durham would score a season high 26 points and grab 5 rebounds, but UTRGV's Moe McDonald would get a last second tip in with 0.7 seconds remaining to defeat CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team 68-66.

It was a very choppy game in the first 10 minutes for all parties involved, CSUB, UTRGV and the officials.  It took 36 minutes to play 10 minutes of basketball, over 30 whistles in the first 12 minutes and three technical fouls were called in the first 12 minutes of play.

Durham would score five points in the first 3:34 of the game and CSUB had an 8-5 lead at that point.  UTRGV would go on a 14-4 run that was finished off by Lesley Varner's three and UTRGV would take their biggest lead of the first half and lead 19-12 with 9:52 remaining in the first half.

But the `Runners would get back to back Durham layups to end the first half and we were all tied up at 26-26.  CSUB was able to overcome 13 first half turnovers to have the game tied at half.  The 'Runners defense was on display, as usual for a team coached by CSUB Head Coach Rod Barnes.  The `Runners would hold UTRGV to 28% (8-28) shooting in the first half and CSUB would shoot over 40% (11-27).

Another Coach Barnes staple? Rebounding.  The `Runners outrebounded UTRGV 24-15 and freshman Jarkel Joiner was the game leader in that category at the break with five.

The game continued to be tight throughout the second half and with 22 seconds remaining, CSUB would get a layup from Rickey Holden and the game was tied at 66.  UTRGV's Nick Dixon would miss a three pointer with four seconds remaining and that miss led to McDonald's winning tip.  CSUB Brent Wrapp's 70 foot heave at the buzzer went off the backboard and rim, but did not fall and UTRGV would improve to 14-12 overall and 5-4 in WAC play.  The `Runners fall to 10-15 overall and 3-7 in WAC play.

Durham would score his 26 game high points on 10-19 shooting and 6-12 from behind the arc and it was the junior's best performance offensively since the show he put on at the Great Alaska Shootout.  Joiner would finish with 12 points and six rebounds and Brent Wrapp continues to add to his career assist total and he led all players with seven assists.

The `Runners could not overcome 22 turnovers, but Coach Barnes will be happy with the offensive efficiency CSUB put on display on Saturday.  CSUB would shoot more than 46% from the field and more than 47% from behind the arc.  The 'Runners also outrebounded UTRGV 41-28.

The 'Runners will be off for the week before Grand Canyon comes to Bakersfield for the WAC Game of the Week on Feb. 17.
