`Runners Come Up Just Short at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Roadrunners and the Beavers split the 10 matches in the first Pac-12 wrestling dual for each team this season, but it was Oregon State who earned the 20-17 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday night.

After CSUB's Eddie Flores fought valiantly against the third-ranked Ronnie Bresser at 125 pounds, the `Runners' No. 20 Sean Nickell  got CSUB on the board with a 4-1 decision over Kegan Calkins to cut the Beaver lead to 4-3.

Oregon State pushed the advantage to 10-3 after the 141-pound bout as Grant Willits pinned Noah Blakley-Beanes 22 seconds into the second period.  Russell Rohlfing , ranked No. 16 in the nation, answered quickly for the visitors, earning a bonus point with a 11-3 major decision over Zach Evans.  The redshirt junior led 1-0 after the first period, but pushed his advantage to 6-1 after a dominating second frame and cruised to an 11-3 victory.

The `Runners dropped the next two matches, but won three of the last four to stay within striking distance.  Bryan Battisto won by major decision for the second time this season, knocking off Colt Doyle by a 10-2 score.  Doyle held a 2-1 lead late in the second period, but Battisto scored a late takedown to take a 3-2 advantage.  He added seven more points in the final frame to earn the four team points.

Dominic Ducharme controlled Myles Terry for the second time in two weeks at 184, winning 10-3.  Ducharme flirted with a major decision for much of the final period, but Terry escaped to prevent the bonus point.  Last weekend, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Ducharme earned a 13-10 comeback win over Terry.

After Corey Griego defeated Josh Loomer 8-3 at 197 pounds, the Roadrunners needed a pin out of Jarrod Snyder to tie the Beavers.  Although Snyder didn't deliver the fall, he did knock off Jamarcus Grant 5-4 to earn his first Pac-12 victory.

CSUB will have some well-deserved time off for the rest of the month.  The `Runners will not be in action again until they compete at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, on January 1 and 2.
