Women’s Swimming to Host Fresno State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team will return to the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center for the first time in over a month when they host Fresno State this weekend.  The diving portion of the competition will take place on Friday, with the swimming competition wrapping things up on Saturday.

"Fresno State is a great team," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen.  "We are going to have to step up our game and race hard to compete.  This is going to be one of those meets where everyone will need to perform well, not just our top half."

The Bulldogs tied for second last weekend at the UNLV Invite with 616.5 points, while the `Runners finished seventh with 301.

Freshman Autumn D'Arcy won her second Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week Award of the season on Tuesday.  Last weekend, D'Arcy set the CSUB record in the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly (53.68) and lowered her own record in the finals (53.50) on her way to a first-place finish in the event.   The 53.30 leads the conference this season.  Also last weekend, D'Arcy swam the fourth-fastest time in CSUB history in the 50 freestyle (23.28), while leading the 200 free relay of Abigail Abshire, Tabea Mose and Maddie Cosgrove to a fifth-place finish and the fourth-fastest time in school history (1:34.34).  The freshman also swam a 2:02.61 in the 200 individual medley, which tops the conference.

Fellow freshman Mose continued her breakout performance last weekend in the 100 backstroke, etching her name in the top five times in CSUB history with a 56.76.  That time also places her fifth in the WAC.  Mose also has the conference's sixth-fastest time in the 50 back and is just in front of teammate Tatum Collatz at 26.88.

Jayssie Haynes continued her assault on the CSUB record books, setting a personal record of 4:56.68 in the 500 free at UNLV to place fourth in school history.  She ranks fourth in the league in that event, fourth in the conference in the 200 breast (2:16.49) and second in the WAC in the 400 IM (4:23.99).

Cosgrove currently sits in second place in the conference in 200 fly (2:03.02).

For the Bulldogs, Manuela Mendolicchio was named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week on Monday after she set won the 200 breast (2:12.30), finished second in the 100 breast (1:02.08), took third in the 200 IM (2:02.94) and set the school record in the 100 IM (57.80) while finishing fourth. The Fresno State divers are also exceptional.  Irina Nikolavea won the 1-meter competition (240.20) at UNLV, while her teammate Kelli Funk earned the 3-meter crown (231.50).

Diving will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and action in the pool on Saturday will begin at 12:00 p.m.
